Tucson, AZ- First day of the WPH Fireball Ektelon Handball Classic is in the books and we have found our four qualifiers. All matches played on Wednesday (March 31st) were competitive, to include two finals that went breaker! Journeyman Sal SantaAna upsets #1 seed, Abe Montijo in two quick games (21-5, 21-9), with driving fist pass shots, top defense and a very steady back wall game. Abe could not find his serve and was stunned by the constant pressure from SantaAna. In the blind draw later that evening, Sal pulled (fellow Texan) Allan Garner's name and will face the #2 seed today at 3:30pm.
The match of the day went to the final between Andy Nett and Chip Morales. After forcing a tiebreaker, Andy Nett found himself down 10-3 before reeling off seven unanswered points to even the score at 10. Morales and Nett both served six times apiece to win the final qualifier spot before Nett made a spectacular back handed dive-re-kill to close out the match 11-10. This is the first qualifier win for Nett. (21-9), 21-20, 11-10. Later that evening in the blind draw ceremony, Nett pulled Moreno's name and will play Thursday at 2pm.
Bill Mehilos defeats Luis Cordova in two games after a very entertaining match, "Cordova is good. The first game could have gone either way," said Mehilos. "The second game's score didn't give Cordova justice. This was a long tough match." Mehilos gets past Cordova 21-17, 21-8, and will now face Emmett Peixoto in the men's top 16 at 12:30pm this afternoon.
Tyree Bastidas made a valiant comeback in the second game versus Danny Perez, but could not keep this qualifier match from going to the breaker; losing 21-20. The tiebreaker ended with Tyree letting out a very vocal sign of relief when he closed out Perez 11-7. For Tyree this is his first 4-wall qualifying victory. Later that evening, in the blind draw ceremony and press conference, Tyree pulled Dave Chapman's name and will now play at 11am.
